Christmas Stocking Project

Update: We have 30 stockings and scarves already made and ready to be filled!stocking

The Outreach committee is continuing our stocking program. This year’s recipient of our 30 stockings will be the Rising Hope Mission Church located on Russell Road in South Alexandria, Virginia.

Rising Hope was established in 1996 to provide support to the community living in poverty along the Route 1 Corridor of Fairfax County and is part of the United Community Ministries network. Between 60 and 80 percent of the community served at Rising Hope has been homeless during some part of their lives or is currently homeless. Many of their volunteers are among those who need services as well. They support individuals with a variety of dire needs from shelter, to food, to clothing, to comfort and support. They work to empower people through a variety of ministries including a ministry for job seekers. They serve families with children who need support to participate in school and the community with their peers.

During the Christmas season they provide small gifts of necessities to over 3,000 individuals. The children served range in age from infant to adolescent. One of the most difficult goals for volunteers, and the permanent staff of Rising Hope, is to provide a sense of joy and wonder to young children at the holiday season.

From Sunday, November 6th through December 4th, we will be collecting donations of stocking stuffers. A list of suggested items is located on the table outside the Simpson Room and also at this link.  If you are unable to shop, monetary donations may be made by check to Olivet with “stockings” in the memo line. A box will be labeled in the Simpson to receive your donations. We will stuff the stockings on Sunday, December 11th, after the 1030 service. Our committee thanks you in advance for your generosity and support of this important program.
